Dounan Flower Market 斗南花卉市场

If you ever need a reminder that China has a big… flower market, take a look at this one located in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. For me, the lengthy subway ride to the outskirts of the city helped build anticipation, I didn’t know what to expect (Jinggui Street Line 4 or Dounan Line 1).

I used to live near a flower market in San Francisco. The early morning frenzy was something I enjoyed when I had the ability to get up at 4am to witness it. But this market was on a whole other level. Once I passed the massive metal door with small transport trucks whizzing all around, I knew I was witnessing something big. And the sound of it all, an enclosed mega space that I couldn’t even see the end of, was crawling with people and with mountains of flowers.

As the largest fresh cut flower market in Asia, the Dounan Flower Market holds an important place in the flower economy. Buyers big and small all come here. I was even told that I could have flowers delivered to where I live in China on a schedule. But it’s clear this market is wholesale, they’re looking for the big fish, those large companies and florists that make bouquets at scale. I was better off taking photos.

Learn from my experience and do the following:

Go early. I was with family and we were only able to travel out there in the afternoon. It still was impressive but I bet it would have been more spectacular early in the day, like before sunrise.

Be Nosy. Walk around and really experience the place. The escalator in the center is a good place to start. I think my favorite spot was on one of the higher levels looking down on all the action.

It’s Organized Chaos. If there’s a certain flower you want to see I’m sure they have it BUT finding it may take some time in a space this big. Be patient and ask around.

Take Better Pictures. I found it to be so mesmerizing that I couldn’t focus on my photography. Take some breaths, bring a wide lens and take pictures. There’s a lot to see here.

Overall, this market was an eye opener for me. Going to a local florist all my life , I never really put it together just how big the flower economy is. This place, with it’s vast size and scale, puts all that in perspective.

A little taste of my experience…
